NRHPF claims responsible for Dimapur killings, Assam govt blames NSCN - IM

In a startling revelation, Naga Rengma Hills Protection Force (NRHPF) today claimed responsibility of killing of nine Karbi persons at Pachaspura near Chumukedima , Dimapur and said that it was a retaliatory action of the armed outfit against the rival KPLT group after killing of four persons of Rengma community and rendering several hundreds homeless.

Speaking to The Hills Times over phone from his headquarters, NRHPF C-in-C Keyhang Rengma said that the cabinet meeting of the outfit today confirmed that its ‘eastern command’ had killed the nine persons at New Jaluki Road in Dimapur in the morning of December 28.

“Our operation team led by commander of eastern command Yangku Phukan Rengma caught three persons believed to be suppliers of arms to the KPLT from Lahorijan area and they led to capturing of six more persons from New Jaluki Road. We have intelligence input that all these persons are involved in supplying arms to the KPLT,” Rengma said.
“After confirming their involvement in the gun racket, our soldiers killed them but could not bring the bodies under our areas due to security problem, Rengma further claimed.

However, the outfit apologised to Nagaland Government for creating a law-and-order situation in the state by killing the nine people. The cabinet of the outfit also passed a resolution in its meeting in this connection.
“It was completely a retaliatory action as most of our soldiers are disgruntled with eruption of fresh spate of clashes in Rengma-dominated areas in the last week of December.” he further said.

He also claimed that the Khuwoni gaon village shoot-out in which four persons were killed, was a pre-planned attack of the KPLT ultras and not a cross-fire between the two groups. He also added that the NRHPF will observe December 27 as the Day of Agony to remember the death of four persons in Karbi Anglong.

On the other hand, the Assam state government has lodged formal complaints with the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) and the Nagaland government accusing the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) of being behind the killings.

Fearing a backlash in Karbi Anglong district, the state government has asked for 25 additional companies of central paramilitary forces from the Centre, of which 10 have already arrived. A high-level security committee formed in Karbi Anglong on Monday also ordered immediate setting up of police pickets and intense patrolling in as many as 17 areas in the troubled Bokajan subdivision of the district. "The situation is still tense in Karbi Anglong.

One may recall that The Nagaland government has instituted a special investigation team to pin those responsible for the Dimapur killings.State government has constituted a three-member high power enquiry committee (HPEC) along with police investigation– special investigation team (SIT) to probe into the recovery of nine bodies from Pachaspura area, Chumekedima, Dimapur.
