So far, only one out of the nine highly decomposed dead bodies recovered from a jungle ditch in Pachaspura near Chumukedima ‘A’ could be identified Saturday.
The victim was identified by family members and Karbi Students as Harlongbi Engti Kathar (21) son of Suren Engti of Rongkanthir under Bokajan, Karbi Anglong(Assam).
According to family members and Karbi students, late Harlongbi was the general secretary of the Karbi Students Association(KSA) Bokajan area. It was reported that late Harlongbi had been reported missing since December 28, the day he arrived Dimapur for shopping.
Dimapur Police disclosed that the family had lodged a missing FIR under Bokajan PS but the same was not intimated to the Dimapur Police.
All nine bodies were kept in the Dimapur Civil Hospital morgue, since Friday night for conducting post mortem on Saturday morning.
Post mortem on the dead and highly decomposed bodies was carried out only at around 3 p.m. Normally, post-mortem is conducted at sunrise.
The delay was caused by non-availability of a doctor since the previous incumbent was transferred to Changtongya. It was disclosed that a doctor had to be brought from Medziphema to conduct post-mortem.
Post mortem has become extremely difficult since the bodies were in a highly decomposed state.
The stench from the decomposed bodies went out from the morgue with people around having to cover their noses.
Sources said efforts to identify the other bodies would be undertaken on Sunday, after which further course of action would be decided by the police.
Meanwhile, police said one spent case of a .22 caliber bullet was recovered at the site on Friday night and another three on Saturday.
The government of Nagaland has alerted the counterpart in Assam on the need to beef up protective security for traveling passengers from Nagaland and Manipur, along the national highways in view of the heightened tension.
Border curfew

According to sources, Section 144 was promulgated by the district administration in Diphu for areas under Bokajan.
CNRH/NRHPF denies killing
Reacting to, what it described as propaganda making the rounds about its involvement in the massacring of nine people, whose bodies were found buried at a place in Pachaspura area, near Dimapur, Council of Naga Rengma Hills (CNRH)/Naga Rengma Hills Protection Force (NRHPF) Saturday denied its hand in the killing of those nine persons.
Speaking to Nagaland Post over the phone, CNRH/NRHPF chairman Keyhang Rengma instead strongly condemned the killing and said they came to know about the incident only on Saturday. “We have no hand in this, we have no knowledge and we strongly condemn the incident,” said CNRH/NRHPF chairman. Keyhang Rengma called upon those responsible to desist from passing the blame on NRHPF for the incident.
RNPC condemns
Rengma Naga People’s Council (RNPC), the apex Rengma Naga body of Rengma Hills, Assam in a press release vehemently “condemned the barbaric murder of nine innocent young people one of whom is learned to be the general secretary of Karbi Student Association, Bokajan unit”.
RNPC general secretary Solomon Rengma expressed deepest anguish at the loss of innocent young lives and the discovery of bodies in neighbouring Dimapur.
Stating that the suffering of the Rengma Nagas in Assam was genuine, RNPC however said “such despicable acts poison the whole atmosphere and rob the suppressed people of sympathizers by sweeping the real issues under the carpet”.
RNPC stressed that “the Rengma-Karbi conflict is a localized issue and should not engulf peoples in neighbouring states”.
“Murdering innocent public is not the answer to any of the problems and the culprits should be arrested at the earliest”, RNPC asserted.
Political agenda
In another statement issued by RNPC president Shahi Rengma and general secretary K. Solomon has put forth its political agenda to the people of Assam
1. The Rengmas are the original and the indigenous inhabitants of Rengma Hills covered by the present Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) administrative area while the Karbis are not.
2. The RNPC representing the Rengmas of Assam no longer recognize the KAAC.
3. RNPC demands the bifurcation of the present (KAAC) administrative area into two parts- one part representing the Rengma Hills and the other part representing Hamren Sub-division of the erstwhile Mikir Hills. The Rengma Hills covering an area of approximately 8724 sq km shall be the homeland of the non-Karbi communities, including Rengmas, Dimasas, Adivasis, Kukis, Nepalis and mainland Indian communities and Hamren sub-division shall be the jurisdiction of the Karbi people.
4. The new autonomous district council comprising of the newly emancipated communities shall remain part and parcel of united Assam as opposed to Karbi people who are fighting for a state separated from Assam.
5. The RNPC calls upon the non-Karbi communities of Rengma Hills, Assam to join hands with Rengma brethrens to fulfill the objective of bifurcation of Karbi Anglong.
6. The RNPC calls upon the dominant community of Assam, the Ahoms to support the Rengmas based on our shared history.
