KOHIMA: The Kohima unit of the International Human Rights Organization ( IHRO) has condemned the recent violence against theRengma Nagas of Karbi Anglong by Karbi militants in which innocent children and women were killed, villages burnt and properties and crops largely destroyed.
It is estimated that between 1,000 and 2,000 people were stranded in the affected areas, and thousands more had taken shelter in relief camps.
The violence, which started on Christmas Day last year, compelled young and old to seek safety in nearby forests.
The Rengma Nagas of the state have accused the Assam governmentof failing to protect their lives and properties.
President of the state unit, Kezhokhoto Savi said the atrocities meted out to the community at Karbi Anglong were a complete violation of their right to live with dignity.
He said, "Human rights include the right to life, liberty, security and the pursuit of happiness. They are fundamental to our existence as human beings. There was a time when Nagas were victimized by draconian laws which allowed Indian security forces to mercilessly kill citizens, rape women and burn entire villages. In modern society such a violation of human rights cannot be accepted or tolerated."
Assam had established its state human rights commission according to the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. Savi urged the government of Nagaland to constitute such a body at the earliest and asked the Assam government to respect the rights of the Rengma Nagas living within its boundaries.
These are some of the findings and concerns shared by the Human Rights Law Network Members during a meeting with Naga Mothers Association (NMA) and Tenyimia Mothers Association at Kohima on 4th January 2014. A team of Human Rights Law Network visited the relief camp on 3rd January 2014.
1. No serving Plates and Cups ( in some Relief camp paper plates and cups are provided but not sufficient )
2. Only Rice and Dal are provided by the Assam Government for lunch and Dinner.
3. Insufficient Blankets (Eg..in one relief camp of 100 people only 30 blankets were provided)
4. No safe drinking water
5. No electricity
6. Scarcity of Cooking pots for which the people are forced to have food at different batches,
7. Ten (10) new infant were born during the course of their escapade and there are no adequate nourishment for the mothers and infants.
8. The Assam government is sending government medical team but the Doctors and nurses are karbis for which the people are unwilling to be treated.
