DIMAPUR, JANUARY 2: The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) has appealed for an atmosphere of “peace and tranquillity, free from conflict” in all Naga inhabited areas. A press note from ENPO President, Chingmak Chang and Joint Secretary, Manlang Phom, while condemning the December 3 incident, where armed cadres of the NSCN (IM) had assaulted passengers of a Zunheboto bound taxi; termed the recent confrontation between the public and the NSCN (IM) as “unfortunate.”
With regard to this, the ENPO appealed to all sections of Naga society and in particular, the Naga political groups for “an orderly and a disciplined chain of command and functionality throughout the year.” The ENPO, in its press note, stated that festivals and Christmas seasons “are often plagued with rampant and innumerable anti-social and intolerable activities.” It further called upon all to resolve all differences and conflicts through peaceful means in the future.
The ENPO also stated that it is equally disturbed and aggrieved at the plight of the displaced Rengma Nagas, following unrest and violence in the Karbio Anglong area of Assam. It strongly urged the Nagaland state government to initiate an urgent state level meeting with the government of Assam, and to jointly approach the central government for positive intervention, thereby restoring law and order. It also demanded that safety be ensured to the lives and property of the displaced people at the earliest.
