GUWAHATI: Manipuris living in the northeastern region have formed a social organization called the Manipuri Association North East India (MANEI) to promote their cultural heritage, identity and traditions.
The association's president, P Sonamani Singh, said the organization would be like a movement and the voice of the Manipuri people to fight for their legitimate social status, political and economic rights. He said that Manipuris living in different parts of the seven northeastern states and Bengaluru gathered here on Sunday to take part in the formation of the organization.
In Assam alone, the Manipuri population is more than four lakh and most of them are settled in places like Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Sivasagar, Haflong, Diphu, Golaghat, Nagaon, Hojai and Guwahati.
Various social and student organizations from Manipur and other northeastern states also attended the meeting. Some of the noted personalities who attended the meeting include Olympian Thoiba Singh, social activist R K Ranendrajit, retired Manipur University professor Muhindro Singh, cultural activist Nabachandra Singh, Isro scientist Omprakash Singh, singer Naba Sharma, social workers Dhon Singh and Thokchom Rajendro.
