GUWAHATI: The much-awaited visit of BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to the state has been rescheduled to February 8 next year, party president Sarbananda Sonowal said here on Saturday.

The Gujarat chief minister was supposed to visit the state in the first half of December this year. He was also expected to address election rallies in Guwahati and Silchar. But the non-availability of a proper field led to the cancellation of his visit, said party sources. His visit is expected to draw a huge crowd, thereby necessitating the need to reserve a field with a capacity to accommodate large number of people.

Sonowal, who is also BJP national vice president, said the field of College of Veterinary Science at Khanapara here has been booked for holding Modi's massive rally. "Modi addressing a rally here assumes significance in the wake of the fact that he is now in the forefront of the national movement for positive change in the country. His visit to the state will definitely enthuse party workers and public in general," said the party president.

BJP held a meeting here on Saturday to discuss Modi's upcoming visit. BJP's national vice president S S Ahluwalia was also present in the meeting. "The purpose of the meet was to deliberate on ways to make Modi's visit a successful one," Sonowal added.

Ahluwalia, meanwhile, reiterated that BJP will oppose tooth and nail the constitutional amendment bill for facilitating the land swap deal between India and Bangladesh in Lok Sabha.

"We are opposing the bill because it is not in the interest of the people of Assam. We are seeing a haste on the part of the government to see that the bill is passed," said Ahluwalia.

23 held in 'Cock fight' racket in Manipur

IMPHAL: Every Thursday, a crowd would gather around a small ring in a village in Manipur's Thoubal district, cheering at the bloody spectacle of cocks fighting. Police have busted the cock fighting racket after a vigorous five-hour operation on Thursday evening, when a police team, assisted by animal lovers, students and various civil bodies, arrested 23 gamblers and rescued six fighter cocks from Thoubal's Achouba area. The cops also seized 56 vehicles belonging to the gamblers and spectators.

Thoubal district police booked the accused under section 11(1) (n) of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, official sources said, adding that other statutes related to gambling might be invoked to tighten the case against he accused.

"We are thankful to Thoubal police for carrying out the operation successfully," managing trustee of People for Animal (PFA), Thoubal, L Biswajeet Meitei told TOI on Saturday. All the arrested persons, seized vehicles, birds, and cages were on Friday produced before a local court which fined the accused under the PCA act, he said.

High stake cock fighting is organized every Thursday at the area where many bird owners and bidders from several parts of the state amalgamate.

"Over Rs 10,000 is bid against each cock in these fights and about 20 per cent of the amount goes to the host, who provides land and seating, and the remaining 80 per cent is given to the winner (bidders). The total bidding amount for one side goes up to Rs 10 lakh per fight," Biswajeet added.

"The cock that retreats from a fight is killed and eaten mercilessly as a punishment for its cowardice by the owner and the losing bidders," he said.

Good fighter cocks that win most matches are expensive and they have to be treated well. A good young bird is sold at Rs 5,000 or above in the grey market. "Cock fighting is an inhumane crime against animals. The poor bird has to fight to stay alive. They sustain several injuries on their eyes, beak, head and throat in each fight," he added.

Russia Suicide Bombing: Attack On Train Station Kills At Least 13 In Volgograd

[caption id="attachment_10524" align="alignleft" width="300"]Russian firefighters and security personnel inspect the damage at a train station following a suicide attack in the Volga River city of Volgograd, about 900 kms (560 miles) southeast of Moscow, on December 29, 2013 Russian firefighters and security personnel inspect the damage at a train station following a suicide attack in the Volga River city of Volgograd, about 900 kms (560 miles) southeast of Moscow, on December 29, 2013[/caption]

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian officials say at least 13 people were killed and scores were wounded Sunday by a suicide bomber at a railway station in southern Russia, heightening concern about terrorism ahead of February's Olympics in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

The National Anti-Terrorist Committee said the explosion at the central railway station in the city of Volgograd was set off by a suicide bomber.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the nation's top investigative agency, the Investigative Committee, said that at least 13 people died in the blast. Russia's Health Ministry said about 50 people were injured.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack, but it came several months after Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov called for new attacks against civilian targets in Russia, including the Sochi Games.

Let there be justice without war

One should not compare the Mokokchung and Zhunheboto situation. This is totally 100% different. That was in 2003 and there was no proper camp in Mokokchung if I am not wrong. This is now in 2013 and there is a designated camp under ceasefire with the GOI.

If you do not know the ground reality or situation, you are simply pushing our Sumi brother and sisters into fire. The NSCN-IM should give justice to the Sumi people, but one should think twice and thrice when we push our Sumi brothers and sisters to do war against with our own Naga people. You do not like the factional fratricide and I also do not like the factional fratricide. In a same way, going war against our own Naga people is no encourageable.

`War means blood. There is no war without blood.`

When you are not in the battle field and shedding your blood, and taunting and poking others to shed their blood by saying, "if Ao can do then why not the Sumi?", you are directly or indirectly insulting the Sumi instead of giving moral support to them.

Justice should be delivered to the people and there should be other alternative means to get the justice without going war against with our own brothers. When I say this, I do not support the NSCN-IM nor the I support the Sumi going war against the NSCN-IM because the casualties will be very high in any kind of war.

Let us pressurize the NSCN-IM to deliver the justice but one should not taunt and poke our Sumi friends to go war against the NSCN-IM as we do not know what will be the consequences. Going war against the NSCN-IM is no only going to affect our Sumi brothers and sisters alone, but it is going to affect the whole Naga people in the future.

Letter from Sumi Hohos to the chairman, Cease Fire Monitoring Cell

To,
The Chairman,
Ceasefire Monitoring Cell,
Nagaland, Kohima.

Subject: Flushing out of NSCN-IM cadres from the Sumi inhabited areas.

Sir,
With due respect, the Sumi frontal organizations would like to bring to your knowledge the following lines for favour of your information and necessary action that, on the fateful night of December 21, the NSCN-IM cadres waylaid a Zunheboto bound Tata Sumi (Taxi) at Aghuito Village, some 12 kilometers away from Zunheboto and mentally and physically tortured the passengers inflicting grievous injuries and also sexually assaulted two female passengers. The two female passengers including a minor girl were forcefully made to strip and after mercilessly torturing them with stick and iron rod, molested them.
In protest against the satanic act, the Zunheboto public held a mammoth gathering rally and placed the following 3 charter of demands:
1. Resolved to urge upon the collective leadership of NSCN (IM) to hand over its cadres involved in the incident to the district administration within 3 days from the date of publication of the Resolution in the local dailies, i.e. 23rd December.
2. In the event, the NSCN (IM) failed to comply with the Resolution No.1, the rally resolved that the Sumi Community shall withdraw its cooperation and support to the NSCN (IM).
3. Resolved that no individual or organization should initiate for release or extend support to the four errant cadres while in custody of the district administration.

The Zunheboto public numbering to around 10,000 gathered in the town on December 26 expressing outrage against the non compliance of the “Charter of Demands” placed to the NSCN-IM and adopted the following Resolution:
1. The NSCN-IM failing to comply with the 3 Charter of Demands put forth by the Zunheboto Public Rally on December 22, 2013 had, as per the Resolution No. 2, declared “Non Cooperation to the NSCN-IM” with immediate effect.
2. As a part of the Non Cooperation to the NSCN-IM, the public resolved to flush out the NSCN-IM cadres in the Sumi inhabited areas including the “Mukali Designated Camp”. For which, every Sumi village shall send 25 volunteers each fully prepared with guns and machetes on the December 28 at 10 a.m. at the Zunheboto Public Ground. There shall be no limit of volunteers from Zunheboto town.
3. Any village failing to turn up at the said “Flush Out Mission” shall not get any cooperation from the Sumi people in times of tragedy in the coming days.

If only the NSCN-IM leadership complied with the very reasonable demands of the public, such confrontation could have been avoided. The Sumi frontal organizations are therefore bringing to your esteemed knowledge that should any unwanted consequences happen, the NSCN-IM be held solely responsible for their act of terrorism.

Tension in Zunheboto cascaded throughout Nagaland when one person was killed and at least three others injured after the NSCN (I-M) cadres inside Mukalimi camp in Ghathashi area reportedly opened fire to prevent over 10,000 Sumi volunteers from carrying out the public resolution to flush out NSCN (I-M) from Sumi areas.
Unconfirmed reports however put the figure at two killed and four injured, including a female. One of the deceased was reportedly identified as Paketo Swu, a civilian from Khuwaboto Colony in Zunheboto town. There were reports of exchange of fire between the Sumi public volunteers and the NSCN (I-M) cadres inside Mukalimi camp.
Four columns of Assam Rifles were rushed to Muklimi to prevent the situation from worsening.
The ire of the Sumi public was sparked by the failure of the NSCN (I-M) in acceding to the three-point demand among which included the handing over to the district administration of the accused NSCN (I-M) cadres involved in the December 21 assault and sexual molestation on two female missionaries and physical assault on other passengers of a Tata Sumo at Aghuito town near Zunehboto town.
On Thursday, thousands of people some armed with sticks, spears and daos reiterated their demand on the NSCN (I-M) to produce the cadres at the rally and also warned the leaders of Sumi frontal organisation of serious consequences if concrete decision against the NSCN (I-M) was not taken.
On Saturday, over three thousand volunteers , made up of 25 from every Sumi village armed with daos, spears, SBBL and DBBL guns and other weapons thronged the local ground in Zunheboto and later drove in trucks, pick up trucks and other vehicles and laid siege on the NSCN (I-M) camp in Mukalimi. It was learnt that most villages sent more than 25 while other villages sent around 100 volunteers in response to the call made on December 26.
On Friday home minister G. Kaito Aye accompanied by parliamentary secretaries Pukhayi Sumi and Vikheho Swu flew in to Zunheboto by chopper and held close door meeting with the Sumi frontal organisations at “Sumi Hoho Ki” located at Old Town Colony.
However the meeting was interrupted by the mob that had gathered outside the Hall and began pelting stones and sticks causing damage to the building. Youths carried placards some of which read “We don’t pay tax to buy guns for you to molest our women,” “No compromise, Enough is enough,” “NSCN (I-M), leave our land,” “We don’t want Mafiaism in our land” and “Justice first, solution later.” The crowd shouted slogans and disrupted the meeting suspecting that certain compromises were being arrived at. They also demanded that the home minister address them in public.
It was only after the minister addressed the crowd that the mob dispersed from the venue.

Cease-fire on the brink of breakdown

With tension brewing up in Zunheboto district following the December 21 incident, Centre was likely to “abrogate” the 16-year old cease-fire with the NSCN (I-M).
Highly placed sources told the Vision Communications that: “Centre is in no mood to continue peace talks with the NSCN (I-M) leaders and the ceasefire will be abrogated anytime as the NSCN (I-M) leaders and cadres have openly violated the ground rules of the ceasefire agreement.”
Saturday’s incident took place at a time when the NSCN (I-M) top leaders general secretary Th. Muivah and chairman Issac Chishi Swu are camped in Delhi to resume peace talks with the Centre.
Sources confirmed to Vision Communications that “since firing from the NSCN designated camp is a serious violation of the ceasefire ground rules, Centre is all set to officially announce the abrogation of the ceasefire agreement anytime…”
“Centre has got all options open including officially making an announcement of the abrogation of the ceasefire agreement which was signed way back in 1997,” said a senior intelligence official on condition of anonymity.
However, the official further asserted that since the NSCN (I-M) top bosses are in Delhi, “the Government would honour their presence and not put them either under house arrest or restrain their movement for the time being. But what happens subsequently is anybody’s guess”.
The official maintained that Centre and the state government would jointly take all possible steps to ensure safety and security of the citizens.
Security forces have been put on high alert and Assam Rifles have been asked to rush to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Sleeping passengers caught in Nanded-Bangalore Express fire; 26 die, 15 injured

As many as 26 people, including two children, are feared dead, and 15 others injured after a fire broke out in a bogie of the Nanded-Bangalore Express in Anantapuram district of Andhra Pradesh today.
The mishap took place near the Kothacheruvu railway station in Anantapur district bordering Karnataka at around 3.30am. Passengers told TV channels they were sleeping when somebody noticed smoke in the B1 AC coach and pulled the emergency chain to stop the train.

Passengers then climbed out of the train when it was still dark and the coach was on fire. According to rescue workers and TV channels, 15 injured passengers were being treated in hospitals in Dharmavaram, Puttaparthi and Anantapur.
CS Gupta, a spokesperson for South Western Railways, confirmed 15 deaths and said casualties could rise. Gupta said most passengers seemed to have choked to death in the smoke that engulfed the coach.

According to NDTV reports, the train had left Bangalore at 10:45 pm on Friday and was headed for Nanded. It had about 64 passengers, mostly from Karnataka, on board. The fire broke out when the train was near the Prasanthi Nilayam ashram.

Sananda Aruna, additional divisional railway manager, said the fire was doused but identifying the dead would take time because the passenger lists were burnt.

"It is a frightening scene inside the coach. Many are charred, beyond recognition, to death," said Raghuveera Reddy, Andhra Pradesh state revenue minister.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has directed Railways and state government authorities to extend all possible help to the victims in rescue and relief operations.

A compensation of Rs. 5 lakh for the dead and Rs. 50,000 for the injured has been announced by railways minister M Mallikarjun Kharge.

Arvind Kejriwal takes charge, vows 'We are here to serve

Arvind Kejriwal took oath of office in a packed Ramlila Maidan on Saturday, becoming the seventh chief minister of Delhi.

Earlier in the day, he said on his way to the venue, “This fight is not about making Arvind Kejriwal the chief minister of Delhi, but it is start for another fight for independence. This fight will go on till this country is free of corruption and injustice. It is a historic day and a victory for the common man today.”

Keriwal reached Barakhamba around 11:30am from Kaushambi station in a metro amid tight security. He headed towards the venue for oath-taking in a car. True to his Aam Admi Party’s (AAP’s) anti-VIP culture, Kejriwal had earlier turned down ‘Z’ category security.

Kejriwal told the media he would go to the Delhi government's secretariat shortly after being sworn in.

His AAP, which promised a corruption-free Delhi as well as lower power tariff and free water up to 700 litre a day, had decimated the Congress in the December 4 elections to set the stage for the youngest Delhi CM’s swearing-in. However, he will have to prove theAAP government’s majority by January 3.

Nevertheless, from clearing the IIT entrance examination to cracking the UPSC to winning the assembly elections, Kejriwal has done all at the first shot.

KPLT kills Six Rengma Nagas in Karbi Anglong, houses set ablazed

Six people, three of them women, were killed and over 25 houses set ablaze when militant outfits of two different tribal groups in Assam’s Karbi Anglong hills district clashed.

Suspected militants of Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT) early on Friday started indiscriminate firing on several houses in  Rengma Naga dominated Khowani village. Four persons, including three women, were killed in the attack. The militants also set ablaze 25 houses in the village.

Police said that altogether seven villages have been affected in the clashes in Karbi Anglong hills district on Friday.

“Since December 14, there has been some tension in remote areas in Bokajan sub division of Karbi Anglong particularly after an incident of assault. Today some clashes broke out in remote areas in the district. Additional forces have already been rushed to the trouble-torn areas”, said Pallav Bhattacharya, Additional Director General (Special Branch) of Assam police.

KPLT has launched an armed movement for the creation of separate state for Karbi tribals. The militant outfit imposes ‘taxes’ on non-Karbi communities living in the district. Failure to pay such ‘taxes’ to KPLT led the militant outfit to attack Naga villages.

The district had witnessed several ethnic clashes in the past. Militant outfits allegedly fighting for ethnic groups have often fought among themselves.

THE OTTER

A man used to set basket-traps to catch fish, but every night an otter came and ate the fish in the traps. The man was angry, and said: "Who is eating all my fish? I will set a trap." He set a trap and when the otter went to eat the fish in the basket-trap it could not get out again, and when the man came in the morning he found it.

"Ah!" he said. "So you are the one who has been eating my fish! Now I shall take and eat you."

He went off carrying the otter in the basket, and when they came near the village the otter heard a pig grunting.

"What's that?" he asked.

"When I have killed and eaten you," said the man, "And go to the jungle to ease myself, the pig will come and eat the dung."

The otter was frightened, and when they had gone a little further and heard a cock crowing, he asked what that was.

"When the pig has eaten the dung and got rid of its droppings in turn," said the man. "The cock will come and eat them and so eat you up for the third time."

The otter was frightened still more, and said: "Don't eat me! Let me live, and I will give you a useful piece of advice."

"What is it?" said the man.

"When one of your children gets a fish-bone stuck in its throat," said the otter. "Take a piece of skin from an otter's throat and stroke the child's throat with it eight times, and say: 'This order the otter gave of old. If it goes down, it goes down, if it goes up, it goes up,' and the fish-bone will go one way or the other."

Then the man let the otter go, and to this day, when anyone gets a fish-bone stuck in his throat, men do as the otter told them.

THE RAJA'S DAUGHTER

Once there was a Kachari Raja, and he married, and his wife bore him a daughter. When she grew up she was very beautiful and the Raja her father wished to take her for his wife. He called all his people and his servants together, and said: "Listen! Men sow dhan in their own jhums, and then reap it and eat it themselves. You people sow pumpkins in your own jhums and eat them yourselves." All the people said: "Yes, yes, that is true."

Then the Raja went on: "You sow chillies in your own jhums, and when they are ripe you take and eat them. You sow cotton in your own jhums, and when it is ready you take it and make clothes for yourselves with your own cotton." The people all said: "Yes, we take cotton from our own fields and make clothes for ourselves, and not for anyone else."

And the Raja said: "You plant kachu, and when it is ripe you take it from your own fields and eat it." The people agreed, and he went on: "You sow maize, and when it is ripe you take the maize you have sown and eat it yourselves." The people all said: "Yes, that is quite true, we sow in our own fields and eat it ourselves."

The Raja said: "You plant banana trees in your gardens, and when the fruit is ripe and ready, you eat it yourselves." And the people all agreed, and said: "Yes, that is quite true."

Then the Raja said: "Then if all this is so, and everything that a man sows he may take and enjoy himself, I can marry my daughter." And all the people assembled said: "Yes, you may."

The Raja sent word to his daughter that he would marry her, but she said: "What kind of man is this, to marry his own daughter? I will run away as far as I can, and not stay near him."

Then the girl, whose name was Disarule, ran away, and she travelled far into the hills till she came near Impuiloa, and there she began to feel very thirsty. She stopped at a great rubber-tree which stood there, and she looked up and said: "If the sky be my father, then let water come from this tree." Then she struck the tree with her stick and water gushed out, and she held her cup to it and drank and was refreshed, and went on and on, far, far away.

When he found that she had gone her father called all his servants and sent them all after her to catch her. They went carrying hens as presents to her, but she had gone far ahead and they could not catch her. They went as far as Daoban village, and so it has that name, 'fowl-carrying', to this day.

Beyond Daoban Disarule thrust her bamboo staff into the ground head-down, and the clump which grew from it there to this day, they say. Then she went on and away, far, far away, and she must have married some Raja.

The big rubber-tree is dead now, but my father and Zuhingba's father and all the old men have seen it.

ARKHANGSUONG - Zeme Folktales

Once upon a time there was a rich couple who had only one child, a boy named Akhangsuong. Every time they went to the fields the child ran after them and cried and wanted to be taken too. Every time this happened they called the young men to catch him and take him back and keep him until after they had gone, but one day after the young men had let him go he ran off a second time and met with some strangers who carried him off and sold him as a slave in a distant village. When his parents came home in the evening and asked the young men where the boy was, they answered that they had taken him back and then let him go, as before; but though his parents searched and searched, there was no trace to be found of him, for the strangers had taken him and sold him to a couple who lived twelve villages away.

This couple had a daughter of their own and another slave-boy, younger than Akhangsuong, named Chellet. When Akhangsuong grew up, he and the girl fell in love and slept together, and one morning they rose so late that there was no wood cut or water carried when the old couple appeared. Akhangsuong was ashamed and said so to the girl, but she answered: "We are in love - what is there to be ashamed about?" and when her parents asked why nothing had been done, she answered that she had overslept.

Akhangsuong was now a young man, and no one could surpass him at any sport. One day the dekachang arranged to go on a dancing tour to another village, but the old couple forbade the two young men to eat in strangers' houses when they went on this trip, and killed a pig and gave them plenty of provisions for the journey. The two went off together with it all, and since Chellet was by courtesy Akhangsuong's younger brother, he carried the load.

The first night in the strange village was spent in singing and feasting, and the next morning the young men went and jumped at the hazoa. Akhangsuong leaped further than any of them, and shouted out his name in triumph. The villagers asked Akhangsuong's companions who he was and who his parents were, but they answered that he was a slave. Chellet overheard this and told Akhangsuong, who was hurt and ashamed and refused to take any more part in the sports, and later on he and Chellet would not go into one of their hosts' houses to eat, but sat down to take their meal at the place in the street where the young men had been putting the stone. Seeing this, one of the village women - who was Akhangsuong's father's sister, although he did not know it - called to them not to eat in the dirt and smells of the street, but to come and have their meal in her house. At first they were unwilling, but after talking it over, they decided that it was not right to eat in public in the street and went into the house. The woman had known Akhangsuong as a child and had heard him shout his name when he jumped, and on looking at him closely she saw a scar on his forehead where he had had a cut from a stone as a boy. She brought out zu and insisted that they must have some as part of her village's hospitality, but Chellet, after drinking a little, hurried away. Akhangsuong would have done the same, but she caught him by the cloth and asked if he were not Akhangsuong. When he said that he was, she took him out and showed him his father's house in the distance and told him that his father was so rich that the house was full of his mithans' dung. "In ten days' time you must come back here," she said. "You must run away from your owner and come here, and I will send you back to your parents."

When Akhangsuong reached his owner's house again he was silent and thoughtful and never said a word when he came to the house for meals, and the old couple asked Chellet what was the matter. He told them that when Akhangsuong had been leaping at the hazoa in the other village and the villagers asked who he was, his companions had said he was a slave, and that he was unhappy about that. The old couple were so angry when they heard this that they went to the dekachang crying: "Who has done this to our son?" and broke up all the sleeping benches and machans with axes.

When a week or so had gone by Akhangsuong began to make ready to go, and taking off all the necklaces and armlets his owners had given him, he slipped out of the house, but did not go far. When the girl saw what had happened she began to weep and lament and ask why he wanted to leave, and hearing this, he came back and told her that he was only joking. She did not believe him, and wherever he went she wanted to go to, whether to fetch wood or to bathe. At last it was time for him to go, and hardening his heart, he ran away to his aunt's house, and she sent him on to his father's village. When he reached it night had fallen and the young men and girls were dancing in the dekachang of which his father was head. He knocked at the back door and his mother called out: "Who's there?" "Your son," he said, and she let him in. Then she went and called his father, who was in the dekachang praising and encouraging the dancers, and told him who had come. Hearing this, he told the dancers: "Don't dance any more - your mother has a stomach-ache." The dancers wondered what had happened to stop the dancing all of a sudden, and were sure that some stranger had come, and the girls went and peeped in through the cracks of the house-wall and they all thought they had never seen anyone so handsome as Akhangsuong.

When the old couple found that Akhangsuong was missing they sent Chellet out to search for him, and off he went with a load of food and went wandering through village after village looking for him. At last he came to where he was, and Akhangsuong saw him and said: "Ah, my younger brother has come!" Chellet said: "Oh, my elder brother, what trouble you've given me! I have searched village after village for you!"

After he had been well entertained in Akhangsuong's house he went back and told the old couple where he had found him, and since Akhangsuong's parents would not let him go back to the old couple's village, and they would not let their daughter go to Akhangsuong's village, the two married and settled in a village midway between the two and there lived happily for many years, and were very rich.

LG G Flex: First impressions

LG-G-Flex-front-panel-635

LG finally introduced its first curved display smartphone in India, the G Flex, at an event in New Delhi. Indian consumers will have to wait till next year to get their hands on the device, as the G Flex will be available in India only in February 2014.

We got a chance to play with the LG G Flex at the event however, and sum up our first impressions below.

When we first held the G Flex in our hands, we were definitely a bit taken aback by its ergonomic curved design, which definitely is the device's USP. The G Flex is curved on its horizontal axis which gives the device's top and bottom edges a curl shape.

LG-G-Flex-front-side-profile-635.jpg

The biggest perceived advantage of the G Flex's curve in our limited period usage, is while talking on the device - the design definitely better hugs your face, much like an old landline phone. In terms of gripping, the curve also helps to comfortably hold the device, but the rear is made of plastic, so it can also slip out during long usage.

When compared to some of its close competitors like HTC One Max and the Galaxy Mega 6.3, the G Flex (160.5x81.6x8.7mm) is better to hold and move around thanks to the curve design.

Next big thing which is very much noticeable in the G Flex is its size, the 6-inch display does puts it in the phablet category and does looks like a large device in hands. Notably, we were unable to easily use the G Flex with one hand, as we found it difficult to stretch our thumb across the device. When talking about phablets, we still believe that Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 (151.2x79.2x8.3mm) and Sony'sXperia Z Ultra (179.4x92.2x6.5mm) were better in terms of daily usage because of a more lightweight and sleeker profile.

At the event, we were told that the G Flex can actually 'flex' until it's totally flat, and one of the company representatives even claimed that the South Korean manufacturer has tested the flexibility of the G Flex up to 100 times with about 40 kilograms of weight putting on the device without damaging the G Flex's screen. Let's say in the case, when accidentally sitting on the G Flex.

While we couldn't test it with 40 kilograms of weight, we did press the curve of the G Flex, and it did stretch to be flat. While the display didn't crack, it's not really advisable to do this on a daily basis.

LG-G-Flex-rear-panel-635.jpg

Following closely on the lines of LG's current flagship smartphone, the LG G2, G Flex also features rear physical keys for power and volume controls. LG has equipped the LED light on the rear power key which comes handy for notifications and while taking a selfie. The keys are metallic and offer good tactile feedback, very much like the LG G2. The volume-up button also doubles up as a shortcut key to launch the Quickmemo app on long press and the volume-down button acts as a camera shortcut key on long press when the phone is locked.

The G Flex also includes a number of ports around the edges including the 3.5mm audio jack and the charging port that sits at the bottom panel, while the micro-SIM card slot sits at the left panel of the G Flex. The rear panel includes the primary 13-megapixel camera with an LED flash, which is accompanied by an IR Blaster.

It would be unfair to end the design part without talking about G Flex's self-healing back that has been creating a buzz worldwide. When we wanted to test the self-healing capability of the G Flex, we were sure we needed a scratchy material; unfortunately we didn't carry a knife so we tried our key chain to rub the rear panel and gave it a surface level scratch which was very much visible initially. After some time, we noticed that the scratches were reduced but not completely eliminated. While looking the G Flex from a certain angle, it looked that the scratches were gone, although it was pretty much noticeable. However, we must confess we were impressed and believe that the G Flex can easily handle day-to-day bruises.

Coming to the hardware of the G Flex, it is powered by a quad-core 2.26GHz Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) processor with an Adreno 330 GPU, and 2GB of RAM. The G Flex easily handled multitasking with ease, and the apps opened and closed instantaneously. Performance wise, the G Flex fared well in our limited testing.

The G Flex sports a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. During our usage, the camera app opened instantly and did click at good speed without any shutter lag. The G Flex is powered by a 3,500mAh battery and weighs 177 grams. The LG G Flex comes with 32GB inbuilt storage, which is non-expandable.

The LG G Flex runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which is a disappointment as we expected LG to ship Android 4.3, the most recent iteration of the OS with the phone. However, with LG finally revealing plans for rolling out the Android 4.4 KitKat update for the flagship smartphone, the G2, we expect that the G Flex will also get the KitKat treatment soon.

lg-g-flex-front-sides-635.jpg

On the software department, the G Flex borrows many things from the G2. The company has added the same LG G2 UI layer on top of the G Flex, majorly changing the look and feel of the interface and enabling users to customise the phone according to their liking.

The LG G Flex also features the KnockON, which is LG's version of double tap to unlock and even lock the smartphone. In our limited testing, we found that at times while trying to unlock the phone it didn't register our taps. In fact, it was annoying at times.

Other features on the G Flex include Slide Aside which is a way to multitask by moving between three apps at once via a three-finger swipe gesture; Guest mode, which allows you to create a guest mode with pre-selected apps for times when your friends or family want to use your phone; Dual Window, which divides the screen into two panels for multitasking and QuickTheatre that gives direct access to gallery, videos and YouTube icons.

You can expect more detailed observations and testing when we review the LG G Flex.

Celebrities we lost in 2013 (according to the internet)

The internet: being tasteful since 1995.

Every year there are a surprising number of celebrity death hoaxes – where the world wide web is suddenly abuzz with reports of the demise of someone famous – and 2013 was no different. Here’s a round-up of those we lost (if you believed the rumours)…

Megan Fox

Megan Fox: Verifiably alive (Picture: AP)
Megan kicked off a star-studded year of fake celebrity deaths at the beginning of January when she was forced to join Twitter after ‘RIP Megan Fox’ began trending. She soon put the record straight and has been alive ever since.

Cher

Cher is still going strong (Picture: AP)
Cher is still going strong (Picture: AP)
Surely the greatest example of mistaken celebrity death this year, Cher’s supposed demise arose from a hashtag misreading after Margaret Thatcher died. ‘Now Thatcher’s dead’ came out as ‘Now that Cher’s dead’ and fans of fierce auto-tuning the world over were sent into a panic.

Chris Brown

(FILES)Singer Chris Brown arrives for the 21st Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation's Oscar Viewing Party in this February 24, 2013 file photo in Hollywood, California. US singer Chris Brown has been charged over an alleged hit-and-run incident, police said June 25, 2013, but the star claimed the other driver involved was trying to make money from him. Brown, who is still on probation for his notorious 2009 assault on then girlfriend Rihanna, took to Twitter to proclaim his innocence over the minor traffic accident in May. "It's not a hit and run if u get out the car, exchange information (who has NO DAMAGE to either cars). This is really ridiculous," he posted on the micro-blogging website. Chris Brown is still with us, THANK GOD (Picture: Getty)
Back in August, Breezy was the victim of a hoax in which it was claimed he had died of a seizure. And back in 2009, he was also the victim of a hoax in which it was claimed he pulverised then-girlfriend Rihanna before being forgiven by her and millions of adoring teen girl fans. Oh wait, that actually happened. Jolly good.

Chloe Moretz

When Chloe was rumoured to have died in a tragic snowboarding accident, the young actress went on a Twitter rant – slamming the individuals who had started the hoax. She mainly seemed to be cross that it wasn’t even snowing in Switzerland at the time (although it probably was snowing in the Alps, Chloe…).

Jeff Goldblum

Goldblum – famously the subject of countless death hoaxes over the years – mostly seemed to be dying of cliff falls and heart attacks in 2013.

Adam Sandler

The internet’s always killing this guy off, too. And, unable to think of anything new, Twitter said Sandler also died in a snowboarding accident.

Yep, snowboard again. This time in August. You know how you always go snowboarding in August, right?

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne is another serial mortal coil shuffler, having ‘died’ several times this year. Unfortunately, the rapper is epileptic and it appears that every time he has a seizure, a new death rumour is sparked…

Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan is often reported to have died (Picture: AP)
Martial arts legend Jackie Chan is reported to be dead on a fairly regular basis. The latest occurrence was in October, after which he assured his concerned manager: ‘No, no… don’t worry, before I die I’ll call you.’

Yeah, just a hoax, guys. Sorry.

One of the more uncomfortable death hoaxes of the year came when rumours circulated that the 15-year-old daughter of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin had died. Stay classy, Twitter.

GOI continues to violate cease fire ground rules, arrested senior NSCN-IM official

DIMAPUR, Dec 26: A senior NSCN-IM ‘official’ has been reportedly arrested by the army in Guwahati triggering strong protest from the Nagas.

According to a well placed source, Yangmi Muivah, who is the ‘Joint Secretary’ of the NSCN-IM’s Cease Fire Monitoring Cell (CFMC) was arrested by the security force personnel on December 23 from near Guwahati Zoo.

Meanwhile, fuming over the incident, the NSCN-IM said that the Indian security forces should know how to distingush between ‘peace time and war time’.

Irked by such cases, the NSCN-IM said the rampant abuse and violation of cease fire ground rules here and there by the Indian security set-up have been increasing despite "our mutual agreement to respect the cease fire ground rules in various CFMG meetings".

“Our restrain not to retaliate in kind so that the hard earned peace process is not jeopardised because of some unscrupulous and irresponsible Indian security officers and jawans is again exploited beyond tolerance. It is for mutual benefit that cease fire ground rules are properly implemented and respected. Maintaining peaceful environment for the civil populace also depends on it. It is easier to destroy than build it,” the NSCN-IM stated.

According to NSCN-IM, Yangmi Muivah alias Jeffrey was arrested by Indian security forces near the Guwahati Zoo. Since then his whereabouts is yet to be disclosed despite efforts to locate him.

He was on leave for medical treatment in Guwahati, the NSCN-IM stated and demanded his immediate release without any harm done.

The NSCN-IM also alleg-ed that on December 19 at Phanjang village in Jalukie the 18 AR raided the house of NSCN-IM captain Atong alias Totong in the presence of his wife and children.

arresting him by implicating under extortion tag in or- der to justify their actions to the Naga people is nothing but malicious and evil, said the NSCN (IM).

“Incident like maligning and humiliating our cadres and arresting the sick are but cheapest act of bravado and not to be proud of. What requires is to honour the cease fire ground rules in letter and spirit till there is official ceasefire between the two par-ties. Therefore, through this open letter we appeal to the Indian security forces to know how to distinguish between ‘peace time and war time’ and we anticipate a positive change in attitude and policy,” the NSCN-IM said.

NERPF to put up united fight against national parties

ITANAGAR: The newly constituted North East Regional Political Front (NERPF), a conglomerate of 10 regional parties, has resolved to jointly fight Delhi-based national parties in the forthcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections.

"With the formation of the NERPF, the strategy followed by national parties like Congress and BJP to remain in power through a divide-and-rule policy and by threatening to impose President's Rule in the northeastern states will no longer work," the Peoples' Party of Arunachal (PPA) said in a statement here.

PPA's chief ministerial candidate Laeta Umbrey and working president Kahfa Bengia, who represented the state at a meeting of the front in Dimapur, said the NERPF has resolved to put up a united front against all the Delhi-based parties in the ensuing Parliamentary and assembly elections in the northeast.

The views expressed by PPA on the refugee problem, particularly that of Chakmas and Hajongs, and interstate boundary disputes and the need for abolition of the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, were unanimously endorsed by the forum chaired by Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio.

Rio is the convener of the forum.

The forum also endorsed the view expressed by Bengia on racial discrimination meted out to the people of the northeast, especially students and the working class, the party claimed.

Both convener Rio and chief adviser Prafulla Kumar Mahanta of AGP assured their fullest cooperation in ensuing Parliamentary and assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh due next year, the statement added.

Sumis withdraws support to NSCN (IM), calls for flush out in Sumi inhabitated areas

The Sumi community has sounded flush out operation against the NSCN (IM) from Sumi inhabitated areas part of the non cooperation towards the outfit for failure on the part of the NSCN (IM) to fulfil the 3 point charter of demands made by the Sumi frontal organisations on the December 21 incident near Aghuito town some 12 kilometers from Zunheboto Town.

Citizens of Zunheboto in large numbers gathered at Centre Point today to express resentment over the failure of the NSCN (IM) to hand over the errant cadres involved in the incident where a lady missionary along with seven other passengers that included the driver, were beaten up mercilessly and the female passengers stripped and molested.

Thousands of people some of them armed with sticks, spears and daos reiterated their demand to the NSCN (IM) to produce the cadres at the rally and warned the Sumi frontal organisation leaders of serious consequences if concrete action against the NSCN (IM) was not taken.

Responding to the call for implementation of non cooperation towards the NSCN (IM), the entire Sumi community has asked 25 members from each Sumi village throughout the state to reach Zunheboto town on December 28 with available arms to flush out the NSCN (IM) cadres from Zunheboto district.

To this, leaders from the Sumi community, with active support from the youth plan to evacuate the NSCN (IM) designated camp located at Ghathashi under Pughoboto sub-division.
The deadline for handing over the culprits to the district administration ended on December 25. On Wednesday, the residence of Sumi Hoho president was surrounded by angry mob on hearing that a delegation from NSCN (IM) “fact finding committee” had come to meet the Sumi Hoho leaders for “compromise.”

The mob, especially the youth armed with sticks and machetes prevented the NSCN (IM) delegation from leaving the place until their demands were fulfilled. It was only after the written assurance that the culprits would be handed over to the district administration before noon December 26 that they were allowed to leave.
The ire of the public also escalated upon the news that certain members from the regional authority of the NSCN (IM) tried to “pay-off” the victims with money to silence them.

Thursday’s rally was organised in anticipation for the fulfilment of the written assurance. However, till 5 P.M in the evening, no word nor action were complied by the NSCN (IM) authorities. The public therefore resolved to take the extreme action and entrusted the Sumi frontal organisations to take steps and measures towards the flush out operation.

It may be mentioned that four NSCN (IM) cadres waylaid a Zunheboto bound Sumo in the wee hours of December 21 morning and attempted to “rape” and “molest” two female passengers and also inflicted grievous injuries to two other male passengers. This triggered a mass resentment among the Sumi community thereby resulting to a massive rally on December 22 where it was resolved that the errant NSCN (IM) cadres be handed over to the district administration within 3 days failing which a call for non cooperation towards the NSCN (IM) would be initiated.

South Sudan troops sitting outside rebel-held city

[caption id="attachment_10293" align="alignleft" width="300"]World leaders are now concerned about civil war in South Sudan, World leaders are now concerned about civil war in South Sudan,[/caption]

South Sudan’s military spokesman said there is increasing tension at a United Nations camp in the rebel-held city of Bor because armed elements have entered the congested area where, according to a UN report, about 17,000 civilians are seeking protection.

Col. Philip Aguer said South Sudanese troops are outside Bor and will soon advance on the city. Bor is controlled by troops loyal to the country’s former vice president. Aguer said troops will also soon advance on another rebel—held city, Bentiu, in the oil—rich region of Unity state.

The United States and Ethiopia are leading efforts to open peace talks on the 10—day—old crisis. Officials say President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar have agreed to meet but specifics including the status of Machar’s imprisoned compatriots are holding up talks.

'Modi for PM' to be BJP's poll slogan

[caption id="attachment_10290" align="alignleft" width="300"]BJP president Rajnath Singh, flanked by senior party leaders L. K. The BJP on Tuesday decided to firmly peg its Lok Sabha campaign on the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, while taking the message to the people that the conditions prevailing now were akin to those witnessed immediately after the Emergency imposed by Congress in 1975.

Following a meeting of chief ministers of five BJP-ruled states and its Parliamentary Board here, general secretary Ananth Kumar told reporters that the election slogan for the party would be ‘Modi for PM’

“BJP’s ‘Modi for PM’ campaign will be on the lines of the JP movement that was launched in the Emergency era to throw out the Congress government,” Mr Kumar said.

Maintaining that in 1977, the mood had been strongly anti-Congress, Mr Kumar averred that a similar situation exists today.

“It was a watershed year. Nobody thought the opposition could garner so many votes,” Mr Kumar said.

The recent Assembly election results show that BJP is head and shoulders above its rivals, he claimed.

Mr Kumar also revealed that as part of their ambitious campaign, BJP workers will also collect funds under a ‘one vote, one note’ programme.

“The minimum amount to be contributed will be Rs 10 while the maximum limit is Rs 1,000,” Mr Kumar said.

During the meeting, BJP President Rajnath Singh claimed that wins in three states and a good performance in Delhi in the recent Assembly polls had set the momentum in favour of the party and would help it in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

The leaders passed a resolution stating that these results were a referendum that a government has to perform or perish.

The party has only one target — of getting 272—plus seats in Lok Sabha polls.

After security, Arvind Kejriwal says no to CM bungalow

NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal, who will be Delhi's new chief minister, has turned down a government bungalow that comes with his new role.

Kejriwal formally rejected the official accommodation - one of the biggest perks of a government post - when Delhi chief secretary came to him with the offer on Tuesday morning.

The chief secretary of Delhi has reportedly met Kejriwal, to finalize arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony as well as the names of the members of the state cabinet.

Kejriwal has also appointed IAS officer Rajendra Kumar as his principal secretary.

Meanwhile, Pranab Mukherjee has cleared the decks for the appointment of Arvind Kejriwal as the 7th chief minister of Delhi.

According to television reports, President Pranab Mukherjee has forwarded the letter of appointment to a joint secretary level officer of ministry of home affairs.

The Aam Aadmi Party on Monday had staked claim to form the government in the national capital, and are meeting on Tuesday to finalize the Cabinet.

Kejriwal on Monday refused the high security cover provided by Delhi Police, saying "God is his biggest security.

In his letter to Delhi Police, Kejriwal said "Thank you for offering me security. But as I have already informed earlier, I don't need any security, I don't need any escort or PSO. God is my biggest security."

Five NSCN-K cadres held with weapons in Arunachal

ITANAGAR: Security forces in Arunachal Pradesh have arrested five "hardened" NSCN (K) militants, including its self-styled revenue secretary and found arms and incriminating documents on them.

A joint team of Lohit and Changlang district police and personnel of the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army arrested five cadres of the rebel outfit from Lohit district during an operation on Friday night, an official said on Sunday.

Police also seized a 9 mm pistol, two magazines, 29 live rounds, pen drives, mobile sets and other documents, including 264 extortion notes and a seal of the organization, a source said.

The arrested cadres include the outfit's self-styled revenue secretary of Lohit district Hongloan Lowakhao along with four of his accomplices, Biswanath Pait, Chow Pintina Choupoo, Chow Sultana Munglang and Faki Wangsa.

Lowakhao, a resident of Paniduria village near Khonsa in Tirap district, was an NSCN (IM) cadre till 2000. He joined NSCN (K) in 2010, the official said. Alerted by extortion notices served by the outfit, Diyun Police laid a trap and arrested Pait, an NSCN (K) linkman in Modai village on December 20, following which Lohit Police and Assam Regiment personnel conducted a joint operation in Namsai (Lohit district) and Diyun (in Changlang district) areas.

The outfit has distributed demand notes for over Rs one crore to various contractors, business personnel, transporters and shop owners.

Tirap and Changlang districts (including Longding) have been witnessing frequent turf wars between NSCN (IM) and (K) factions over for area dominance, the official said.

Despite presence of the security forces, there have been several cases of murders, kidnapping, extortions and other forms of violence in the two districts.

Tension in KA Rengma Naga areas

Rengma Naga Peoples Council (RNPC) and Western Rengma Students Union (WRSU) Monday said there has been “unabated” violence and threat to Rengma Nagas in Karbi Anglong.

In a joint statement RNPC president Shahi Rengma and WRSU president Phenpiga Rengma claimed physical violence has erupted all over the Rengma villages and there have been security lapses committed by law enforcing agencies in Rengma areas.

The organizations said: “No Rengma is safe in their own land. Every where the defenceless Rengmas are targeted by the trigger happy Karbi militants.”

The Rengmas have become soft target in every nook and corner of the hills, claimed RNPC and WRSU. The two organizations alleged that Rengmas have been often “beaten or killed”.

Though the peace committee formed comprising of Karbi and Rengma NGOs have been making efforts to bring peace between the two communities by organizing peaceful meetings, Karbi militants have continuously targeted Rengmas with violence and hatred.

RNPC and WRSU said on Monday, Karbi militants had assaulted three Rengma youths identified as Samuel, Teshithang and Jimathong hailing from Tseguchangri village without any rhyme or reason. These three youths have been taken to Chokihola for medical treatment.

While the three youths were being assaulted, the Karbi militants also warned them that if they did not handover NRHPF cadres within three days, all the Rengmas living in Rengma hills would be “killed,” claimed the two organizations.

Stating that threatening to kill all Rengmas in Rengma Hills has become regular propaganda of Karbi militants, RNPC and WRSU said situation in Rengma Hills was tense and the situation was likely to snowball into major problem if the law enforcing agencies did not set up police outpost in the Rengma hills permanently.

If the government of Assam did not take up this sensitive issue seriously, communal violence between the Karbis and the Rengmas would be unavoidable, RNPC and WRSU stated.

In the event of a “full scale war” erupting, the Assam government would be held responsible for all the consequence, said RNPC and WRSU.

RNPC and WRSU statement followed Council of Naga Rengma Hills (CNRH)/ Naga Rengma Hills Protection Force (NRHPF)’s claim on Sunday that the group knows all the details of how another Rengma Late Nzankheng was “kidnapped” and “murdered” by one Karbi militant group at a village in Chokihola.

NSCN (IM) acknowledges “shameful” act

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 23: On behalf of the NSCN/GPRN, Kilo Secretary, Q. Awomi has written to the President of the Sumi Hoho and Sumi Totimi Hoho acknowledging the “unfortunate” and “shameful” act of the Naga Army personnel on December 21 at Aghuito.  “In order to do justice, the competent authority has arrested the culprits and started interrogation. In addition to this, an inquiry committee has been constituted at cabinet level. It is assured that befitting punishment shall be awarded,” he wrote to the two presidents, following an emergency cabinet meeting held today.

Meanwhile, a press release from the MIP acknowledged “The unfortunate incident which happened on December 21 at Aghuyito where our three cadres without any directives and under the influence of alcohol have violated serious human rights, which is not in any manner justifiable nor condonable.”  Describing it as a “barbaric” act made with “sick mentality,” the NSCN (IM) maintained that this has “no place in the Naga society.” Seven passengers, including two women, on a taxi to Zunheboto were harassed and beaten by the three personnel on the night of December 21.  “We are deeply ashamed that our three cadres instead of playing the role of protectors became monsters and therefore we have taken actions accordingly. As per the Naga Army Act Rules & Regulations (NAARR) Chapter Viii articles 87 & 106 clauses i & ii, the three cadres namely, Sergeant Apam, corporal Mahori and private Ninoto of Zasibitou Battalion has been punished with rank demotion, rank retardation and they have been awarded with hard labour imprisonment,” informed the MIP.

Further, it stated that “We seek forgiveness and appeal the victims in particular and Naga people in general to pardon the actions of our three cadres whose irresponsibility and indiscipline has cost immense trouble and embarrassment to the government. This incident has made us re-introspect the evilness within us. We pray for an early recovery of the victims and pray that God will give them strength to forgive us.”

Aam Aadmi Party indicates it's ready for power in Delhi

[caption id="attachment_10208" align="alignleft" width="281"]Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal with his supporters. File pic Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal with his supporters. File pic[/caption]

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seems set to form a government in Delhi, with party leader Arvind Kejriwal saying on Sunday that "a major announcement" will be made on Monday.

As the party's campaign to elicit a "yes" or "no" from people in the capital on government formation entered its final phase, the AAP said that most voters favoured an AAP government.

It also said that AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, who is tipped to be the chief minister, will address the media at 11am Monday and then proceed to meet Delhi's lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung.

"Majority of the feedback we have received is 'yes'," spokeswoman Ashwathi Muralidharan told IANS.

The party has got responses from over 6.5 lakh people through SMS, interactive voice response (IVR), Facebook and the AAP web site, she said.

Separately, AAP held public meetings in some 270 municipal wards of Delhi, covering the entire city, where too most people said they were for an AAP government, party leaders said.

Kejriwal, a former Indian Revenue Service official, indicated earlier Sunday that his year-old party was preparing to take power with Congress backing despite a split election verdict.

"We will deliver whatever assurances we made in our manifesto. It (manifesto) was prepared after wide consultations, and a lot of thought went into it," he said.

"Moreover, the people of Delhi are expecting much more from us, and we will perform."

Later in the evening, Kejriwal told a public meeting in Sarojini Nagar in south Delhi that his party will keep "returning to the people" on major issues — even after forming a government.

"This is democracy, this is real democracy," he said, denying criticism that the AAP's decision to seek a referendum on whether or not it should take power was "nautanki" (drama).

But AAP leaders made it clear that there would be no alliance with the Congress, which has only eight seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly but which agreed to prop up a government of AAP (28 seats).

The BJP, which finished as the largest group with 31 seats, decided not to form a government after falling short of the half-way mark by five.

The BJP's "no" forced the LG to invite the AAP to try form a government. Kejriwal then said he was in a moral dilemma on whether or not to take power with Congress help, and decided to seek people's views.

The AAP's "yes" or "no" campaign was announced December 17. The campaign ends on Sunday midnight.

The AAP initially said it would be happy to sit in the opposition but was forced to reconsider following accusations that it had developed cold feet over fulfilling many of the promises it made in its manifesto.

These included providing 700 liters of free water to residents and a 50 percent cut in power tariff.

Solution to Naga issue rests with highest level: Pandey

[caption id="attachment_9996" align="alignleft" width="273"]RS Pandey: File Pic RS Pandey: File Pic[/caption]

Government of India’s Interlocutor for the Naga political talks and former union secretary and chief secretary Nagaland, R.S Pandey (retd) IAS disclosed that the status of the negotiations between the government of India and the NSCN (I-M) has reached the highest stage. “It is now up to the government of India to take it up with stake holders (the other neighbouring states) he said.
Talking to Nagaland Post over phone Sunday, Pandey also said he will contest the 2014 Lok Sabha election on BJP ticket from his home state Bihar and would win.
Asked if he could guarantee a win in Nitish’s stronghold, he said “the recent assembly elections showed that people wanted change.” He said BJP was also strong in Bihar and for him it was the best alternative”. Asked whether he harboured political ambitions while in service and whether he had always been in line with BJP/RSS ideology, Pandey replied in the negative.
Nagaland BJP welcomes
State BJP president Dr. M Chuba Ao has welcomed R.S Pandey, government of India’s Interlocutor and former state chief secretary into the BJP fold. Chuba said Pandey’s decision was practical and commendable and came at a time when there was nationwide realisation that the Congress-led UPA had failed “everyone including the Nagas to deliver their poll promises”.
He said Pandey’s rich administrative experience as chief secretary in Nagaland and his role as interlocutor would be of immense help for the BJP-led NDA, which had recognised the uniqueness of the Naga issue. Chuba also said Pandey’s sting at union secretary petroleum and natural gas would prove beneficial for the nation and Nagas in particular.
He blamed the Congress for failures notably such as heightened corruption, price rise, mismanagement of development programmes etc as reasons for the party’s downslide.
He asserted that only the BJP-led NDA would be able to attend to the intricate and complex matter for bringing about a solution for the all-round progress of Nagas.

Nagaland State Government defends policy on Natural Resources

Kohima, November 6 (MExN): Issues pertaining to Article 371(A) of the Constitution of India, petroleum and natural gas in relation to Article 371(A), rules of executive business and Nagaland Special Development Zone (NSDZ) were discussed at the consultative meeting held here today at the Capital Convention Centre.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio termed the meeting historic, and felt that it was important to understand the genesis and actual position that Nagas are facing today. Reminding that the 16 Point Agreement was the outcome of Naga Peoples Convention (NPC), Rio felt necessary for such Consultative meet when the agreement of the NPC is in question by the Government of India.

“Nagas are further divided today and that is why even what has been agreed is questioned,” Rio said. Stating that Government of India was trying to put pressure to take away the rights of the Nagas, Rio appealed to the people of Nagaland to be united. With regard to Article 371 (A), Rio said, “We are within the Constitution but the Government of India has become unconstitutional.” He further reminded that others will take advantage if we do not implement and go forward with the framed rules passed in the assembly. “We respect Government of India when we exploit, when we produce, pricing etc but cannot agree to share ownership of our land and resources,” Rio mentioned. On rules of executive business relating to promotion, appointment and transfers and posting, Rio said that “we are not against anybody but it is our duty to fight for the right of the Nagas and the state.”

Minister for planning and co-ordination, evaluation, geology and mining T.R. Zeliang elaborated the latest position of petroleum and natural gas in relation to Article 371 (A), highlighting the legal opinion from the Solicitor General of India, letters to the Chief Minister from the minister, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, letters to the Chief Secretary Nagaland from the Director, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, Assembly resolution 2010, Consultative meeting resolution held on July 12, 2013. He said that as far as petroleum and natural gas is concerned, the state government has decided to “go ahead.” He felt that the government of the day and the people of Nagaland should speak in one voice to uphold Article 371 (A).

High Court Bar Association president Timikha Koza, in his presentation on Article 371(A) and its interpretation, reaffirmed that the Bar has resolved to resolutely defend the rights guaranteed under Article 371(A) and invited all civil societies, NGOs and public in general to come forward to take a united stand in defending the special provision. Koza pointed out that the issues of 16 Point Agreement and Article 371(A) of the Constitution are being discussed after 50 years of Statehood in an open public forum without any hesitation. He said that it is “painful” to observe “what the Government of India has given to the Nagas as a special provision by the right hand was trying to take back with its left hand one by one.” Towards this, he cited examples of (i) Transfer of the State of Nagaland from External Affairs Ministry to Home Ministry (ii) Removal of Nagaland from special funding pattern in 1989 and (iii) now trying to interfere in the ownership of land and its resources. Koza called upon the civil societies, NGOs, Naga public and the Government of Nagaland to make a concerted effort to demand from the Government of India to restore the State of Nagaland to the original status which was “unilaterally and arbitrarily” withdrawn by the Government of India.

Additional Chief Secretary, P&AR, C.J. Ponraj highlighted the various aspects of Rules of Executive Business and pointed out Article 74 and 166 which explains the provisions of Government of India and State Government to run the affairs of day to day business. He also explained Rules 34(i) and Rule 34(ii) which deals with the lists to be referred to the Chief Secretary and to the Governor. Justice & Law secretary K.N. Chishi also highlighted on the provision and rights of Article 371(A) and the formation of Nagaland state. Representative from tribal hohos, civil societies and politicians of different political parties participated in the discussion. Chief Secretary Alemtemshi Jamir chaired the consultative meet.

NSCN has not deserted from the national trust: NSCN (IM)

As compelled by the unwarranted political situation created by the so-called Action Committee Against Unabated Taxation (ACAUT), the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) breaks its silence to inform the Naga people in particular and the world in general of its stand on collection of taxes. After the failure and surrender of Naga National Council (NNC) to the enemies through the Shillong Accord (1975), NSCN was formed in the line of the national principle and mandated by the National Assembly for continuing the resistance movement till to the last. The patriots under the banner of NSCN with strong conviction and faith fought against the enemies of all hues in the east, in the west and everywhere safeguarding the issue thus far with heavy price.

NSCN has not deserted from the national trust mandated to us by the Naga people to bringing about an early negotiated political settlement with the Government of India (GoI). Accordingly, GoI and NSCN are engaged in dialogue at the highest level, without any condition and in a third country to working out solution on the bases of the ‘Unique history and situation of the Nagas.’ NSCN is a recognized entity because the communities of the world and even GoI have recognized it. It is an open book to all that the cease-fire agreement between GoI and Khaplang (NSCN- K) that reads: ‘Security forces will retain the right to enforce measures to uphold the laws of the land and prevent any disturbance to peace’ is a sellout. The law of the land is nothing but the constitution of India. Therefore, can they represent the aspiration of the Naga people?

No one should doubt about it that NSCN is the only authentic political organization of the Naga people. It has been running Naga national government for decades defending the historical and political rights of the Nagas.

But what is this ACAUT? What authority does a committee have to dictate the Naga people or NSCN? Even then, NSCN leadership tried to understand with the ACAUT leaders a number of times for amicable understanding through dialogue, but they have not respected our good will gestures. Who are these sections of people who in the name of “democracy” or “freedom of speech” are attempting to hijack the name of the Naga people by organizing an acrimonious rally on the 31stOctober, 2013 in Dimapur with the full backing of the Indian armed forces? What further situation do they want to create? The militarized rally speaks volume of their treacherous hidden agenda. Who are the enemies of the Nagas and who are the traitors? Is it NSCN? Never!!! What are the contributions of the ACAUT leaders to the cause of the Nagas? Why the ACAUT has to share platform with some anti-national elements, retired and worn out Indian government officers and the agents of Indian intelligent wing? Are they the advocates of the Naga people? It is topsy-turvy!!! In fact, it is they who have been continuously spreading manipulated and concocted lies that has been poisoning the minds of the Nagas through mass media. Do you think that they are the allies of revolution? Are they the champion of the national cause? We don’t think so. Who are the false preachers? Is it NSCN or they? Let the people judge it.

Who is the mother of ACAUT? Some elements of the Dimapur Naga Council (DNC) have consciously or unconsciously created a Frankenstein out of a rat. Since you have created it you must own it to your own risk. You are the author of this commotion.

The Committee (ACAUT) says, “One government one taxation.” What is that government? Who are running that government? To whom should you pay the tax? You must have the courage to speak out the truth.

NSCN questions ACAUT: Does those factions who have surrendered to the GoI and their “laws of the land”, whether they have any right to represent the Nagas and collect Tax from the Naga people?

What do you mean by factionalism? How do you legitimize the factions in the name of Naga Political Groups (NPG)? Do you think NSCN is a faction, the mandated organization of the Naga people? You are terribly misinforming and misguiding the general public by equating NSCN with those ‘factions.’ You have unwittingly or deliberately become the platform of those anti-Naga national elements that propagate hatred and sow seed of dissension among the Nagas in the name of ‘unabated taxation.’ Are you too ignorant to understand that all people on earth pay taxes to their respective governments? The Naga people too have been paying taxes to NSCN for decades after NNC capitulated to the GoI in the infamous 1975 Shillong Accord. NSCN has every legitimate right to levy taxes from the people because we undoubtedly are the organization upholding the righteous cause of the Naga nation..

Are you too blind to see that more than 80 organizations (“Unions”, “Committees” or “Associations”) including Dimapur Municipal Corporation (DMC) are extorting taxes with documents issued by the DC (Deputy Commissioner) Dimapur District? With whom do they share their percentage? You are fully aware that many state agencies are also collecting taxes on this and that pretext. Are you also part of that system and shedding crocodile’s tears? And now you are making NSCN your scapegoat?

For your kind information we repeat, NSCN is the one and only authentic political organization of the Naga people that is protecting the future of the Nagas. It is not a faction or political group as you presume. One wonders how ACAUT arrogantly places itself above the nation. Be it informed that NSCN does not function under the ambit of state or state government or any committee instituted by it, neither under the constitution of India!!! The Dimapur Naga Council, the proprietor of ACAUT, gives appropriate counsel to the elements within your fold. Chastise your pampered child so that Nagas are not hoodwinked and serious misunderstanding does not arise between us.

Indeed, the adversaries never sleep! They are planning one plot after another in order to tear down NSCN. Unfortunately, some sections of spineless Nagas have become victims of’ the enemies’ ‘divide and rule policy.’ However, NSCN is steadfast to the principle and not confused at all. It will never succumb to their diabolic design.
NSCN will not be a silent spectator to the challenge placed before the Naga people. We will never allow any forces on earth to undermine the cause of the Naga people and their hard earned peace process in the name of ‘unabated taxation’ or any pretext. We do not blame the general public for the recent happenings in Dimapur. But things have become very clear to us. We have taken serious view on the situation created by ACAUT with ulterior motive. It is well known to us that ACAUT has become an instrument of adversaries to tarnish the image of NSCN before the world and jeopardize the Indo-Naga political dialogue and in that process trying to weaken the Naga cause. In spite of the fact, we will carry forward the banner of the national movement in the face of all odds.

The situation you have created has become political, which will have a negative impact on the innocent people. Whether you are conscious of it or not, enemies have already landed within you. They are exploiting every situation you have created to their own advantage. Do you know who were the architects of the 16-point agreement and the Shillong Accord? The phantom of the 16-point agreement is hovering in and around Dimapur. The battle is drawn once again between the patriots on the one hand and the traitors and reactionaries combined on the other. We know for sure that all shades of traitors and the enemies’ forces will ultimately join you to fight against NSCN. We are resolved that we shall stand the ground with four millions Naga people in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ if the storm rocks Nagalim again. See that you do not go too far.
KUKNALIM!

HANGNEGUN - Zeme Folktale

There was once a small boy and every day when his parents went to the fields he used to run weeping after them and clamour to be taken too. They took him home, but he ran after them again, and they struck him and scolded him and took him back to the house once more, but still he ran after them. Day after day this happened, till one day he started after them later than usual. His father and mother had gone well ahead and did not hear him, and as he ran along the path calling for them he met a party of strangers from another village, and they seized him and carried him off. When his father and mother came home in the evening they searched for him but could not find him, for the strangers had taken him a long way away.

The strangers sold him to a couple who already had a son of their own, a boy a little younger than Hangnegun, and the two grew up together, Hangnegun believing that his owners were his real parents and their son Hraiteomakpa his brother. The man Bungsing and his wife ill-treated him and gave him only scraps to eat, but Hraiteomakpa was fond of him, and when his parents gave Hangnegun bad and scanty food, Hraiteomakpa protested and shared his own good helpings with him. When the two grew up to manhood, Bungsing bought handsome clothes and necklaces and brass armlets for his own son, but Hraiteomakpa took them and gave them to Hangnegun. When Hangnegun came to the house for the midday meal and the man and his wife saw him wearing their son's fine clothes they were furiously angry and made him take them all off, and they put them aside for Hraiteomakpa. When Hraiteomakpa came in he saw the ornaments lying there and asked what had happened, and when they told him he was so angry that he cried out that if his elder brother could not have them, then he would not, and snatching up all the fine things he dropped them into the pounding-block, and although his parents tried to stop him, he hammered all the ornaments to pieces with the dhan-pounder.

One morning the village bucks were to chase and catch a mithan. Hangnegun was with his sweethearts in the dekachang, and knowing this, Bungsing and his wife armed themselves with a stout stick each and went early in the morning and stood one on either side of the door.

"Hangnegun!" they said. "What are you doing? Are you still asleep? Your brother Hraiteomakpa has already caught hold of the mithan's tail!"

Hangnegun heard this, but he also heard them whispering to each other to hit him hard as he came out, and he dashed out so quickly that they missed him altogether and only hit each other. Hangnegun went to the morung and spoke to the malik's wife, who was his kinswoman although he did not know it, and asked her whether it was true that Hraiteomakpa had caught hold of the mithan's tail many times already.

"How can it be true?" she said. "He is still asleep. Your parents have told you lies."

When the young men went to catch the mithan, Hraiteomakpa was the first to seize the tail, and when his parents heard him shouting his father's and grandfather's name they were delighted, but he lost his hold, and Hangnegun caught the tail. Bungsing and his wife were angry and hurried down with sticks in their hands, intending to hit him and make him let go; but when they hit at him he dodged them so neatly that they never struck him and he never lost his grip on the tail, and he ran off so quickly behind the mithan that they could not catch him.

When Hangnegun caught the mithan he called out the names of Bungsing and Bungsing's father, but afterwards the malik's wife called him and told him that Bungsing had only bought him from his kidnappers, and she taught him the names of his real father and grandfather and told him to shout them if he caught a mithan again.

The next time the bucks went to catch a mithan Hraiteomakpa was again the first to catch the tail, and when Bungsing and his wife heard him shouting they were delighted; but he let go, and Hangnegun caught it. Bungsing and his wife tried to hit him as before, but he dodged them and ran on shouting the names of his real father and grandfather. When Hraiteomakpa heard what Hangnegun was shouting he was disturbed and wondered what had happened that his brother should shout other names.

Another day the villagers agreed to hold a fish-poisoning and they asked who had seen the creeper in the jungle. Hraiteomakpa said he had seen some, and that there would be enough for twenty loads; Hangnegun also said he had seen some, but that there was only enough for ten loads. Twenty men went with Hraiteomakpa and ten with Hangnegun, but when the twenty reached the spot they found none at all and when Hangnegun's ten reached their place they found far more than they could carry. The twenty shouted across to Hangnegun's party to know how much they had got, and Hangnegun called to them to send twenty more men. When they arrived Hangnegun had all the loads cut and ready, and they all came back to the village carrying them.

Next day everybody from the village went to the river to catch fish. The bucks and girls went first, carrying the creeper, and while they were waiting for the others the girls passed the time by looking for lice in the bucks' heads; but while ten girls were hunting in Hraiteomakpa's, no less than twenty chose to look in Hangnegun's. When the rest of the villagers came along and Bungsing and his wife saw how many more girls had chosen Hangnegun, they were very angry.

After the creeper had been beaten and the fish had began to come to the surface, Hangnegun, who was a strong swimmer, dived in to pick up fish from the bottom of the pool, and Bungsing and his wife caught up a big stone and threw it in in the hope of killing him, because he always outshone their son; but he came out on the other side of the pool with a fine catch of fish, and dived in again, and again they missed him, and again he came out with a big catch. When he scrambled out he went to Bungsing's wife and asked her what she had caught, but she only had two or three tiny fish lying in the mouth of the basket. Then he gave her from his own catch of big fish.

They all went back to the village in the evening and the young men arranged to have a feast in the morung the next day, each bringing food from his own house. When the time came everybody had brought rice and fish and zu except Hangnegun, who sat there without eating or drinking anything. The others told him to go and fetch his share from his house, but he refused. The malik's wife knew how he was ill-treated and called him and offered him food and drink from her house, but he would not take it. All his friends went on telling him to fetch some and at last he went to Bungsing's house. Bungsing's wife had left only the stale, hard rice at the bottom of the pot and the bones and scraps of the fish, and he took them. When he got back to the morung he opened the packet and showed his friends what he had brought, and said: "Look. You wanted to see, and I was ashamed to show you." Then he flung himself down on the bench and covered himself with his cloth and lay as if he was asleep, and was too ashamed to get up, although his friends pleaded with him and begged him to eat with them.

Later on, when the feast was over and he was sitting in the morung, the malik's wife called him and said: "Your real father and mother live far away in another village, and they are now very rich and have much dhan and your father is malik of a morung. If you want to go to them, go, for you have nothing but trouble here."

Then Hangnegun began to want to go, but in spite of the ill- treatment he had received he was sorry to leave his younger brother and his friends. Hraiteomakpa saw that he was always silent and thinking about something, and wondered still more what had happened, and when he remembered that Hangnegun had shouted other names when he caught the mithan, he was frightened and watched Hangnegun all the time.

For a long time Hangnegun could find no chance to escape because Hraiteomakpa was always with him, but one day he slipped away. Hraiteomakpa missed him and hurried after him and caught him up, and said: "Don't go away! Come back with me. We will go back together." Hangnegun said: "I'm only going for a walk. I shan't go away." Hraiteomakpa would not believe him and worried him to come back to the village. At last Hangnegun said: "I tell you I won't go away. Now go back and fetch me your father's drinking- cup and some thirst-raiser and I'll wait here and drink it when you come back." Hraiteomakpa would not go until Hangnegun promised he would not run away, but the moment the boy had gone Hangnegun slipped into the jungle and hid himself. When Hraiteomakpa came back and found no one he was so consumed with grief and anger that he flung down the cup and broke it in pieces, and threw down the appetizer in the road. Then he wept and wept, and Hangnegun watched him from the jungle, but because of the cruelty of Bungsing and his wife he would not go back, and at last Hraiteomakpa, still weeping, went back to the village. Hangnegun came out of the jungle and went on, but a little further on he met two girls, both of whom loved him; they too had guessed that he was going and were standing with their hands joined across the path.

"If you go beyond this," they said. "You are no true man. You must not go any further."

He begged them not to stop him, but they would not let him go, and at last he caught hold of their wrists and tore their hands apart and ran on. They followed him, calling him and beseeching him to come back, but he ran on till he came to a log bridge across a stream. He ran across it, and before they could come up he seized the log and threw it down into the water. When they saw they could go no further the girls fell into a passion of grief and wept and tore off their cloths and beat the ground with them, but Hangnegun hurried on towards his father's village.

It was dark when he reached it and the bucks and girls were dancing in the morung. He slipped round to the back door of his father's house, and knocked, and his mother opened it and recognised him. She went and called her husband, who was watching the dancing, and he came and saw his son and recognised him. Then he went back to the morung and called out to the dancers: "Your mother has a bad colic. Don't dance any more." Then they all stopped and were quiet, but one of the girls heard voices inside the house and peered in through a crack and saw the most handsome young man she had ever seen in her life, as bright and shining as a lamp; and all the other girls came and looked too and they had never seen anyone so handsome as Hangnegun.

The next day his father made a feast to celebrate, and killed a big boar; and the old man was full of drink and beside himself with joy, and came out of the house and screeched and leapt like a young man, and shouted: "You told me my family was extinct. But although you said so, my race is not extinct, and my family is restored again!"
