PM’s remarks at the closing function of the Manipur Sangai Festival

In his remarks at the closing function of the Manipur Sangai Festival in Imphal today, the Prime Minister said sports was the fulcrum of tremendous economic activity. Several allied disciplines such as nutrition and physiotherapy were associated with sports, and this could boost employment prospects for the youth of Manipur. 



The Prime Minister made an impassioned plea to free the youth of the state from the menace of drugs. He said the youth of this state, that has the potential to inspire the entire nation through excellence in sports, should not fall prey to drugs. 

On the subject of employment, the Prime Minister said the entire northeast region had the potential to emerge as a hub for call centres. 



The Prime Minister referred to the requests made by the Chief Minister for improving infrastructure such as roads and hospitals. He said he was happy that the Chief Minister looked forward to this Union Government delivering infrastructure. He said Rs. 60,000 crore had been earmarked in the Union Budget this year for infrastructure in the North-East. He said he would look into each of the requests made and see what could be done about them. He said the Union Government wishes to take the entire Northeast region to new heights of development. The Prime Minister also said that during his recent visit to Myanmar, a lot of attention had been given to improving connectivity between Imphal and Southeast Asia. He said a lot of initiatives had been taken for infrastructure, and the results of these initiatives would be visible in the coming days. 



The Prime Minister said that by participating in the closing function of the Manipur Sangai Festival, he wants to give a message to the rest of the country about the immense tourism potential of the state. He said tourism and infrastructure went hand in hand, and tourism was a big generator of employment. 



The Prime Minister said he wanted youth from the Northeast to be recruited in the Delhi Police. He also referred to a proposal made by him when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat, for 200 women police personnel from each of the Northeast states to be deployed in Gujarat for 2 years. He said such steps could boost national integration.

NPMHR to organize peaceful protest on 2nd September

The Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR, Delhi) is organizing a peaceful protest on 2nd September 2014 to;

•Condemn the imposition of Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code and deployment of counter insurgency forces; Manipur Police Commando (MPC) and Indian Reserved Battalion (IRB) in Ukhrul without any justification since the 13th of July 2014

•Condemn the use of high calibre live rounds by the counter insurgency forces against peace rallyist, killing two civilians while injuring more than 35 people on 30th August 2014.

•Demand the revocation of Section 144 CrPC and withdrawal of the Manipur Police Commando (MPC) and Indian Reserved Battalion (IRB) from in and around Ukhrul District, Manipur

•Demand the Government of Manipur to apologize to the people of Ukhrul District, Manipur for its arbitrary actions causing deaths and social trauma.

Hornbill festival 2013 to be bigger

Taking note of the increasing popularity of the Hornbill Festival world over, department of Tourism Wednesday reasoned that the Hornbill Festival, 2013 has been extended to 10 days.

This was also done in order to promote inflow of more tourists and to commemorate the 50 years Celebration of Nagaland Statehood Day, to be inaugurated by the President of India on December 1.

Food Festival, Chef Award

In a bid to promote Naga culinary skills in the international arena, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio has contemplated the idea of introducing Food Festival and the Hornbill Chef Award, during the upcoming 10-day Hornbill Festival, 2013.

Hornbill 2013 will witness the ‘shopping festival’ to promote Naga products and handicrafts.

 

Hornbill International Rock Contest

The Hornbill International Rock Contest and music festival, organized by the Music Task force, Government of Nagaland may well be the longest music event in the country. Attractive cash prizes and music loving crowd makes the event a unique experience for performers.

Such extravaganza is in keeping with the essence of the many Naga festivals; marked by feasts, dances, games and music, all in full measure. Nagas do not do things in small instalments. These celebrations invariably coincide with agricultural lean periods such as after-harvest, and therefore the feeling of gaiety and generosity, even to a fault. In the old days the rich used to host several-day-long feasts in which the villagers revelled, and guests from other villages were feted. These were times when the youth were pitted against each other in friendly competitions in performing arts and traditional sports, while the old proudly looked on.

Circumstances have changed; some have moved on while a few still embraces the old ways. Nevertheless, in either case the joie de vivre of the Nagas lives on. The annual Hornbill Festival, and therefore the Hornbill International Rock Contest, is set in this background. In time, the event hopes to go international.

Over the years, there have been some great performances by bands from all over the country. The very fact that a band is selected to perform at the event is an achievement.

North East Design festival to be hosted in Delhi from 19 - 22 September

Delhi will host for the first time a Design festival that will showcase and strong history of traditionaltextiles and handicrafts from states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland , Manipur Mizoram and Sikkim.

Delhi will host for the first time a Design festival that will showcase and strong history of traditional textiles and handicrafts from states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland , Manipur Mizoram and Sikkim. The North EastDesign Fest will be organized by the North East Institute of Fashion Technology (NEIFT). The four day festival will include fashion shows, cultural event, musical show and exhibition stalls of handloom and handicrafts of the North East region. Bollywood actors Minisha Lamba, Sonal Chauhan will walk the ramp as showstoppers.

The event will take place at the Select City walk mall in the capital, from 19th September to 22ndSeptember. The festival is presented by Ministry of Textiles with the support of Ministry of MSME, Ministry of Home Affairs, Handicrafts, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The event will showcase works of upcoming designers from North East region like Aji Semy, Meghna Rai Medhi, Boney Darang, Rinzing Choden, Charlee Lalthlenmawia, Melody Runremsangi, Vianney Nongrum, and so on.

According to event director Vikram Rai Medhi, "The festival will act as a curtain raiser to showcase upcoming designers, performing artists, artisans, craftsmen, weavers coming from different parts of North East region. People of the capital will get an opportunity to interact with this wonderful talented young visionaries and this shall create a bridge of understanding and mutual growth of thought process between NER and mainstream."

The band members who will perform during the festival will include Featherhead- Folk/Rock Fusion, MOD (Minute of Decay), Red Light Passengers and Towering Faith Rock Band.
