Sangma disclosed this while addressing the Performance Review Committee meeting of the North Eastern States at Hotel Vivor here Friday.
According to DONER secretary, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the North East vis-a-vis of the country has improved and that in the eleventh 5 year plan, the cumulative growth rate of the North East is 9.95 against the growth rate of 7.9 in the country.
Despite this, he said North East was still lacking behind to catch up with the rest of the country’s Gross Domestic Product growth of 14 per cent per annum.
The growth rate has to be the target continuously for the next five years and in order to restore the growth rate, North East region would still need massive doses of investment, Sangma stated.
Sangma pointed out that before independence, the north eastern states were growing at a faster rate than the rest of the country as far as GDP was concerned. However, he said immediately after Independence, the growth rate of the region suddenly declined.
On the reasons, he said before Independence all the borders were open, ideas could flow, things could flow and most of the people living in the border areas were much more prosperous but right after Independence all the borders were sealed.
DONER secretary said for North East to grow and to catch up with the rest of the country environments has to be created which would allow the private sectors to come in.
