DIBRUGARH: Irate locals torched two oil tankers at Longswal in Tinsukia district after a youth was run over by a vehicle on Wednesday morning.
Amitabh Dey (19) was knocked down by an oil tanker on NH-37 at Longswal at 7.15 am while he was on his way home riding his motorcycle, police said. The victim, a resident of Chapori village of Doomdooma, died on the spot. The tanker driver fled the scene with the vehicle after the incident but later surrendered at Bordubi Police station. The accident infuriated the locals who came out in hundreds and assembled at the spot, blocking the national highway. The mob torched two oil tankers which were passing through the area at that time. The fire was, however, extinguished and a major tragedy was prevented as one of the tankers was loaded with fuel at that time.
Soon, police arrived and tried to disperse the crowd. But they had to fire in the air to bring the situation under control. Tinsukia DC SS Meenakshi Sundaram and SP PP Singh also arrived at the scene and managed to pacify the crowd after a long discussion. The highway was finally cleared for traffic at 11 am. Significantly, people of the area were already peeved at the high frequency of road accidents on busy highway caused by trucks and tankers travelling at break-neck speed in the recent past.
