Tension heightened after Wednesday’s killing of a Naga in the border area by Assam Police, which came after a series of incidents involving operations launched by Assam Police on Naga villagers located at the disputed border area.
In latest violence in the border between Dimapur and Karbi Anglong districts, a Naga, identified as Supongtemjen Imchen (40)son of Imtinungsang of Chuchuyimlang village, Mokokchung district was reportedly killed by Assam Police in a jungle near Indisen village (Dimapur) Wednesday at around 10 a.m. It was learnt that the victim was a resident of Half Nagajan, Dimapur.

Quoting eyewitness accounts, Police said that on hearing the gun fire, they tried to run and three of them escaped. After the firing stopped, they searched for each other and regrouped but found that Supongtemjen was missing. After searching the area, the body of Supongtemjen was discovered inside the jungle. Three of them escaped and informed the Indisen Village Council of the incident. On being informed, Police went and recovered the dead body in the jungle and took it to the Dimapur District Hospital (DHD) for conducting post mortem.
Police said a bullet head was also extracted from the victim’s dead body during post mortem. The case was also under investigation by police.
A member of the Frontal Ranges of Meranger and Senso (FIRMS) told Nagaland Post, that Naga villagers used to do cultivation in the area for many years. Border incidents in the area have shown a rise in recent months which led officials from Assam and Nagaland to hold a series of meetings on February 4,11,20 and 25 this year. FIRMS also claimed that the villagers at the disputed area had submitted a representation to DC Dimapur but there was no response.
FIRMS also accused the government of Nagaland of not taking any steps for the safety of the villages and warned, that if its demands were not met as contained in the representation addressed to the DC Dimapur, it would resort to its own course of action and for which, the state government would be held solely responsible. FIRMS committee convenor Temjen Jamir said an emergency meeting was convened Wednesday after the incident where the house condemned the torture and killing of late Supongtemjen Imchen by Assam Police personnel.
